Emma is a PhD candidate in the Department of Health, Kinesiology & Applied Physiology at Concordia University. A former pre-professional dancer, she is interested in how online dance classes can be used as an accessible way to improve the fitness of older adults.
She completed her dance training in her hometown of Kingston Ontario and in New York City (Ailey School Professional Summer Intensive) studying various styles including ballet, modern (Dunham, Graham, Horton & Limón) and International Style Latin DanceSport. Since 2015 she has worked as a dance instructor for a wide range of ages (4-95 years old).
In 2020 she began conducting research on the benefits of dance for older adults. She has presented research findings at various conferences (Montreal, New York, Taipei & Fukuoka). She has received several awards including the Ed Whitlock Fellowship and scholarships from both the prestigious Fonds de Recherche du Québec – Santé and the Canadian Institute for Health Research.
Outside of school Emma has continued to teach dance classes and is continually taking courses to learn new dance and pedagogy approaches.
Emma holds a BSc. in Exercise Science & Psychology and a MSc. in Health & Exercise Science from Concordia University, is a certified group fitness instructor (CanfitPro), barre fitness instructor (American Barre Technique) and is a certified instructor of Progressing Ballet Technique
