Emma (she/elle); English/Français
PhD Candidate (Exercise Science); Dance Instructor; Public Lecturer
I am a doctoral candidate in the Department of Health, Kinesiology and Applied Physiology at Concordia University. As a former dancer and ongoing community instructor, I am interested in how dance, combined with blood flow restriction, can be used to improve the balance of older adults and reduce their risk of falls. Having grown up in community centres, I am passionate about exploring the benefits of arts/fitness programming and improving accessibility/health equity.
I completed my dance training in my hometown of Kingston Ontario and in New York City (Ailey School Professional Summer Intensive) studying various styles including ballet, modern (Dunham, Graham, Horton & Limón) and International Style Latin DanceSport.
In 2015 I began teaching dance, working with a wide range of ages (4-95 years old). My passion and curiosity for teaching human movement ultimately led me to pursue my BSc. in Exercise Science & Psychology at Concordia University (2021).
During my undergraduate, I began researching how online dance classes could be beneficial to improve balance among older adults. This project was co-supervised by Mary Roberts, PhD and Andreas Bergadhl, PhD; funded by the Concordia Undergraduate Student Research Award. This work continued into my Master’s in Health & Exercise Science (2023), funded by the CIHR, FRQS and Ed Whitlock Foundation, and ongoing PhD in Health & Exercise Science (Expected 2028), funded by the FRQS.
As the risk of falls is higher among those who are inactive, it is my hope that the social and creative elements of dance can inspire those who feel ill-at-ease doing traditional exercise programs to adopt a more active lifestyle. I am particularly interested in teaching classes online as they have tremendous potential to increase accessibility of exercise to those who are living in remote areas, are caretakers, immunocompromised or are impacted by Canadian winters.
While completing my graduate studies I have been able to work with a variety of community groups including engAGE Centre for Research on Aging, Respecting Elder Communities Against Abuse and the Montreal Chinese Hospital.
My knowledge mobilization work has led to me being invited as a speaker and moderator on panels hosted by the Centre for Research on Brain, Language and Music at McGill University. My ability to communicate my research publicly has also led to me being a Canadian National Finalist for the 3-Minute Thesis Competition, as well as a Public Scholar at Concordia University (2025-2026).
Outside of academia I have continued to teach dance classes and am continually taking courses to learn new dance and pedagogy approaches. For teaching, speaking and workshop requests, please contact below.
